On Friday, Douglas Salisbury said the Oceanside restaurant “intends to continue its operation and exceed its guests expectations for many more years to come.” The restaurant was originally built by Arthur Salisbury, Douglas Salisbury’s father and founder of the Jolly Roger chain. ![]() In recent years, the building was beginning to show its age.īefore the renovation, the owners had described it as ”old, tired, dated and in need of substantial improvements” in a letter to the city outlining a previous makeover plan that would have included an outdoor dining area. “But if they are happy, I’m happy.”īuilt in 1973, the Jolly Roger Restaurant is something of a city landmark with tall, wide windows in the dining room that offer spectacular views of boats docked at the harbor. “Would I have liked to have seen a hotel there? Yes,” Kern said. That includes a 127-room hotel, 24 condominium units and a 7,000-square foot restaurant on the site of the Rodeway Inn and the former Flying Bridge restaurant just south of the harbor, Kern said. “Other than the Marina Suites, the area is totally underserved as far as visitors are concerned.”Ĭouncilman Jerry Kern agreed that a hotel at the harbor, and its added hotel tax revenues, would have been nice, but said there are several other hotels near the coast in the city’s planning pipeline ![]() “I think that location would have been perfect for a boutique-style hotel,” Lowery said. Councilman Chuck Lowery said it would have been nice to have another hotel at the north end of the harbor. ![]()
